More than half of children do not get enough sleep: Report

More than 60 percent of children and teenagers in China do not get enough sleep, according to a report released by the Chinese Sleep Research Society on Sunday.

The survey showed 63 percent of children and teenagers in China sleep for less than eight ho

urs a day, the minimum sleeping time to ensure health for such a group, the report said.

The survey, conducted at the end of last year and January this year, covered nearly 70,000 ch

ildren and teenagers aged from 6 and 17 across China, including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.

Heavy school work loads and popularization in the use of electronics products are th

e top two major causes for lack of sleep among children and teenagers in China, the report said, addi

ng that 8.4 percent of the group are still busy with homework after 11 pm from Monday to Thursday.

On Sunday, Bouteflika’s campaign manager said if re-elect

ed, the president would orchestrate a national conference to pave

a way for debate over amending the constitution and deciding a time for early elections.

However, the regime’s talk of compromise did little to placate voter frustrations and was met with ridicule, says St

ephen McInerney, executive director for the Washington-based Project on Middle East Democracy.

Algerian lawyers protest on February 25, holding up placards with slogans in Arabic that read: “The lawyers are with the people.”

For many Algerians, he says, the suggestion of early elections was simply a play for time by the country’s ruling pa

rty, the National Liberation Front, which appears to have been unable to choose a successor to Bouteflika.

”They tried to buy themselves more time, but on the other hand, the

y’ve had quite a bit of time and they’ve known this election was on the calendar,” McInerney adds.

Venezuelan troops defect at the border with Colombia

Three members of the Venezuelan National Guard defected Saturday at Venezuela’s border with Colombia, the Colombian immigration department said.

The troops abandoned their posts at the Simon Bolivar International Bridge on the Colom

bia-Venezuela border and requested help from Colombia’s immigration officials.

Also Saturday, soldiers with Venezuela’s National Guard

fired tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters who were demanding to cross the border at Ur

eña into Colombia to work, according to a CNN crew that witnessed the scene at the Tienditas Bridge.

Workers faced off with the soldiers, chanting, “We want to work!” before being disperse

d by the tear gas. Men with shirts covering their faces started throwing rocks toward the guard.

US argues momentum for change in Venezuela is growing despite border violence

These tense scenes played out Saturday, a day after violence broke out at a Venezuelan town near the border wit

h Brazil over aid delivery, leaving two people dead and 17 others injured, local authorities said.

Tensions are running high at Venezuela’s borders amid opposition plans to usher aid into the country this weekend

in defiance of President Nicolas Maduro’s wishes. Maduro called on Venezuelans to “mobilize” Saturday. “Let’s

all take to the streets to defend our independence with conscience and joy,” Maduro said on his official Twitter account.

Moreover, the West likes to attack China by using Chinese

dissidents and their families. Western countries believe that they can easily dig up stories about those people and they can be easily manipulat

ed as well. However, what happened with Angela Gui has sent a clear message that there is always the risk of it backfiring. Those peopl

e are fully aware of being used by some Western interests, which results in a strong sense of insecurity and suspicion. Some of them are also selfish. A f

ew years ago, a Chinese dissident well-known in the West left China for the US and later embarrassed his American patrons.

Furthermore, nowadays Western public opinion is increasingly radical and populist, which has made it difficult for some countrie

s to adopt a realistic approach and repair relations with China after disputes. Some prominent for

eigners who have a comprehensive understanding of China are facing an increasing risk of acting differently from t

he radical sentiment. Recently, John McCallum, Canadian ambassador to China, was criticized and finally lost his po

sition, due to his attempt to ease the China-Canada relationship regarding the incident of Meng Wanzhou.

Last but not least, the incident has primarily embarrassed the Swedish Foreign Ministry m

ore than causing trouble to China. Some Western media claim that Anna Lindstedt’s behavior pr

oves China exercises significant influence on ambassadors of Western countries to China. Such a comment is hi

ghly unprofessional and makes no sense except to show they do not know what they are talking about. Am

bassadors are usually among those in their own country who hope at the utmost to maintain sound relations with th

e country to which they are posted. Generally, they are supposed to play a dovish role, not a hawkish one. Some We

Despite the deterioration in conditions, the abundance of apartm

ents and relatively low prices continue to attract young and first-time buyers, as

well as tenants. Sp

eaking in a range of accents, a substantial number of residents squeeze

into buses and the subway every morning and head to work.

Chen Mo is one of them. After studying in the capital for seven years, he chose to

settle in the city

after graduation. In 2001, he took a job with State Grid Corp, the national

electricity generator.

Initially, Chen rented an apartment in

Huilongguan, a crowded community in Changping district,

10 kilometers west of Tiantongyuan’s center, that was well-known for its

affordable property.

Served by subway line 13, Changping’s relative ease of access to public

transportation attracted Chen, so he decided to buy an apartment there in 2010.

After months of research, he discovered that he could buy an apartment of more than 100 sq m in Huilon

gguan for 30,000 yuan per sq m, which would only be enough for a home of 50 to 60 sq m in other parts of the city.

“Property prices doubled in Huilongguan in just six months, so I made the down

payment in 2011 without any hesitation,” he said.

Many others followed suit, so a dense population and heavy traffic congestion quickly became the community’s default setting. Ho

wever, without any industry to provide jobs and with few high-quality schools,

many people chose to leave once they had made enough money.

McDonald’s Loss of Exclusive Use of Big Mac Trademark

Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, January 17 (Reporter Zhao Manjun) Irish fast food

chain Super Mac Co. said on January 15 that the European

Union Intellectual Property Office (EU Intellectual Property Office) ruled to revoke the trademark of “Big Mac”

registered by McDonald’s in the EU, which lost the exclusive right to use the trademark.

McDonald’s responded that day, refusing to accept the verdict and preparing to file

a complaint. Since 1998, the company has trademarked its best-selling double-decker beef hambu

rger in Europe, including “Big Mac” and “BIG MAC” and “Grand Big Mac” variants. This ruling revokes the

registered trademark “BIG MAC” in English capital letters.

Super Mac applied to the European Intellectual Property Office to revoke

some of McDonald’s trademarks in 2017, citing McDonald’s

failure to “really use” registered trademarks. The latter last week ruled

that McDonald’s could not prove that it had “genuinely used” all registered tradema

rks in EU member states for five consecutive years, so it approved Super

Mac’s application to revoke the former “Big Mac” and other trademark registration.

SuperMac said that although no product was named after Big Mac, McDonald’s prevented the latte

r from expanding its business scale on the grounds that the English name of

Supermac was similar to Big Mac.

According to the company, after the ruling, in addition to McDonald’s, other

fast-food chains will be able to name their fast-food products “Big Mac” in the future.

In an e-mail to Reuters, Pat McDonald, founder of Super Mac, said, “The

company is happy to win the trademark (revocation) appl

ication.” Large enterprises will not be able to “bully” smaller competitors by

“using a large number of registered trademarks and then idling them”.

McDonald’s said in an e-mail to Bloomberg on the 15th that it was

“disappointed” with the ruling of the European Intelle

ctual Property Office and would appeal to the Alicante institution in Spain,

confident of “reversing the result”.

The multinational fast-food giant has previously submitted to the European

Intellectual Property Office (IPA) proof such as printed co

rporate webpages, posters, product packaging materials and employee testimony in an attempt to prove that

registered trademarks are “genuinely used” in business activities.

In its ruling, the European Intellectual Property Office said McDonald’s had to provide specific t

ypes of evidence to support employee testimony, which could not be used by

corporate websites, posters and packaging materials. In addition, the Intell

ectual Property Office is unable to judge whether or how consumers “buy”

products with specific trademarks from McDonald’s Web pages.
